Meanwhile, international film and media organisations are trying to tempt North Queensland marine and dive experts with offers to try to track and catch the stingray that killed Irwin.

Port Douglas-based dive expert and film crew member Peter West – who was the first to raise the alarm after Irwin was struck by the bull ray – said he feared that a senseless hunt and slaughter of stingrays could follow the high-profile tragedy.

Mr West said he was being contacted by companies, particularly from Canada and the US, with requests to hire his boat and crew to go to Batt Reef near Low Isles and search for the bull ray with the barb that punctured Irwin’s chest and heart.
