Mailing lists are one of my favorite things. I am on a slew of them thru various email addresses. I’ve been on lists since I first discovered the internet – I wound up on a list by accident that sent me hundreds of emails. Didn’t have a clue as to why.
I learned very quickly what a fountain of info they can be; and I was hooked.
I don’t post much anymore however. I used to be active on most all of my lists but as work and life interfered; I kind of quit. Not only this; but anymore you can’t seem to have a valid opinion on anything without it insulting someone, or getting into a fight, you’re better off keeping your mouth shut.
And the lists that really bug me are the ones that have a moderator that nips a thread in the bud because of something that’s said that may insult someone. Or that you’re expected to post “the moderators way”. And; because rules make one afraid to post; you’re afraid to post. But yet; this same list moderator expects you to post at least once a week or you’re gone. Huh?. Talk about your basic control freak.
On one list I’m on someone posted about they use notepad for html, and should they get something else?
I’m of the opinion that if you hand code; you may as well stick with that: you have much more control; you don’t have to go back and clean up anything a program helpfully inserts for you. I name off several programs that I have used – still use every now and then and also mention that they suck. This is because they do: *in my opinion.* I used the term “I personally think they suck.” I didn’t say the program sucks and you suck because you use it. The comment was not directed at any one program – I have my favorite program that I do hate because it does suck and creates basic robots out of it’s average user, is extremely easy to exploit and should basically be wiped from the face of the earth:O but I didn’t single out the program. The comment was directed at several. How the hell is this going to insult someone? If the potential is there for insulting someone; then they better by god get off the internet because they won’t be able to handle it. My opinion of course.
So of course I get chastized. If you’re not part of the click (??) you’re going to get it too.
What is wrong with good healthy debate? The old “you’re entitled to your opinion as long as it agrees with mine, and if it doesn’t agree with mine then I’ll shut you up”.
I’m on several lists where things can be intelligently debated. People can argue about programs and nobody gets up in arms. If the thread does get out of hand then it can be resolved then.
