Hooked on Phonics Lessons Monday June 25 – discovered this morning it’s the Learn to read version, lol. But I’m going to have him do it,
if only to refresh.

The reading thing isn’t going as smoothly as I wished. I was hoping that my son would take an interest in the books I selected for reading – they have dragons in them – but unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to be the case.

With the freakin FCAT over our heads, while he has learned to read, he was taught shortcuts – or how to cheat – early in the learning stage of reading. So now, instead of reading, he looks for “words”, and thus, doesn’t read a whole paragraph or a section. And then he doesn’t get why he didn’t comprehend what he was reading.

It’s frustrating – especially since I had such a love of reading when I was young, and I still do. I didn’t learn of shortcuts until high school or college, and then I used them properly, if at all.

It’s also frustrating for him. He thinks he’s stupid – and he’s not. But the reading difficulties he is experiencing is hindering him in everything.

I blame the government and the mandatory FCAT for this – and I’m not the only one. It’s no wonder our society is regressing in education. Let’s teach them to cheat so their test scores look really really good!

If I could afford Sylvan Learning Centers, or another tutor, I would do so, but I can’t. When I was growing up, Dade County used to offer a “reading clinic” for free. My brother went 5 days a week until his reading improved. This no longer happens. If you need something like this, ya gotta pay for it.

Sucks.

Anyway, I’m thinking about changing tactics a bit. I’m going to look thru his books, read these as well but make him come up with questions for me. A little way for him to “get back” at me. Plus, he needs to work on his writing skills. He’s way too fond of copying his summary out of the book.

In a text file, write the below in a small report:

13. Explain why garbage and trash must be disposed of properly.
2. Make a chart showing the jobs you and other family members have at home. Talk with your family about other jobs you can do for the next two months.

Read pages 1 -29 of Dragonflight, by Anne Mccaffrey

Some of these are “open book”, others are to be his impressions. Using who, what, when, how, why – which I forgot it seems. Keeping in mind that I’m coming up with these by the seat of my pants:

What is a Turn?
What is Lissa’s birthright?
What does it mean to Impress?
Who are the main characters in this section?

What do you see:

Where do they live?
What is a Weyr?
When – do you have an idea of the time they are living in?
How do they live?

This is a personal blog, and it spans over 14 years. You may see some cussing, ranting, a little weirdness and alot of stupidity. Oh, and whining.

Over the years I’ve used it to test things I maybe shouldn’t have messed with (innocent look), and I’ve tried to clean up but may have missed some stuff. You’ve been warned.
